Arch of Peace Arco della Pace

The Arch of Peace Arco della Pace in Piazza Sempione closes the Sempione Park to north.

In prolongation Via Sempione leads to the eponymous pass in the Swiss Alps.

Napoleon Bonaparte took Milan in 1796/97 while the First Italian campaign.

At Milan Cathedral on 26 May 1805, Napoleon was crowned King of Italy with the Iron Crown of Lombardy.

Napoleon intended to build the Arc de Triomphe as a new entrance gate to Milan. He began 1807 with the work on the Arc de Triomphe.

The triumphal arch is oriented so that Napoleon could pass it, when he came from Paris to Milan over the Simplon Pass.

The bronze statues that enthrone the 25-meter high monumentwere manufactured in the Milanese sculptor's workshop Manferdini. The Sestriga "Minerva of Peace" was created by Abbondio Sangiorgio and the "four winners on the horse" by Giovanni Putti.

After the fall of Napoleon, the Arc de Triomphe was initially abandoned and not completed until 1838 as the Arch of Peace Arco della Pace.

Napoleon never saw the completion the the Arc de Triomphe in 1838. The Arco della Pace obtained a new purpose and reminds of the European peace of 1815.
