The Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II connects the Cathedral Square with Piazza della Scala.
Built in 1877, it is the salon of Milan with luxury shops, bars and restaurants.
The glass roof of the gallery is forming a cross, which can be well seen from the terraces of the Duomo.
When configuring the gallery, they decided to decorate the cross of the Galleria with four large floor mosaics.
Besides the emblem of the Savoy, the symbols of the four important towns in Italy can be seen: the red cross on a white ground of Milan, the Roman wolf, the swan of Florence and e bull of Turin.
The central cross with beautiful floor mosaics became the "Salon of Milan". Surrounded by cafes, the Ottagono, the octagonal area in the center of the gallery, is meeting place and venue for small artistic performances.
Particularly noteworthy is the floor. The mosaic in the center represents the coat of arms of the Savoy royal family.
The four lateral mosaics are dedicated to the four major cities of the Kingdom of Italy:
Milan, represented by the red cross on a white background
Turin with the bull. The tradition of Good Luck Charm:
Seeing the well stocked bull soon emerged the superstition that to the ladies puts fertility when they touch the big testicles of the bull or sit on it, and the men, if they are out on the heel of the right-left shoe once on its axis turn. As this practice is applied of the Milanesi and mostly tourists instead of the testis you find a hole in the floor.
Florence, represented by the swan and
Rome with the Roman wolf legend of Romulus and Remus.
The 1910 half-moons painted on the buildings represent the allegories of the continents of Africa, Asia, Europe and America. In 2006, the first European 7 star hotel in Milan has been opened in the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele. The 7 Stars Galleria situated over the Ottagono offer suites named after the operas of the important Italian operas of Giuseppe Verdi. A personal butler and tickets for La Scala in Milan are included in the hotel service.
Luxury boutiques, such as Borsalino, Gucci, Prada, Luisa Spagnoli, Luis Vuitton and historic restaurants, as Savini, Biffi and Campari Bar make the stroll through the Galleria at any time for experience.
At the entrance of the gallery is the historic Bar Camparino in Galleria.
